# Content License & Media Rights

The code in this repository is covered by [`LICENSE`](./LICENSE) (CC0 1.0),
inherited from the Tampa and Iran War templates. This file covers the
**content**: the compiled data in `js/data.js`, the research notes in
`research/`, and the third-party media the site displays.

## Compiled data

- The compiled dataset (`window.indigoData` in `js/data.js`) and the research
notes in `research/*.json` are released under
  [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
- Individual figures are facts drawn from the sources cited on each data
point. Every point carries a `source` object with `institution`, `title`,
  `date`, `url`, usually the supporting `quote`, a `verificationStatus`
  (`CONFIRMED` · `PENDING` · `DERIVED`) and an `accessType`
  (`FREE` · `REGISTRATION` · `PAYWALL` · `API`).
- Quotations from sources are short extracts kept as evidence for the figure
they support; their copyright stays with their authors and publishers.
- Values marked `estimate: true` or `DERIVED` are conversions, indices,
remainders or editorial reconstructions; the `note` names the inputs. Do not
  cite them as primary figures.
- Suggested attribution: *Indigo: The Blue That Dyed the World*
(`fritzhand/history-of-indigo`), compiled from the sources cited per point.

## Media policy

1. **Embed only rights-cleared images.** An image is shown only if its record
states public domain (or the Public Domain Mark), CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA.
The exact rights statement read on the record is kept as `rightsEvidence`
   in `research/media.json`.
2. **Link out for everything else.** Items whose reuse terms are unclear or
restrictive (NC, ND, "all rights reserved", or a record that could not be
read) are not embedded. Candidates rejected on these grounds are listed in
   the notes of `research/media.json`.
3. **Credit every image.** Each `mediaAssets` entry records its `license`,
`creditLine`, the `sourceUrl` of its record and, where it was digitised
from an archive, `upstreamArchive` and `upstreamUrl`. The credit line and
license are printed on every card and figure.
4. **Mirrored thumbnails.** Display copies are mirrored in `assets/media/`,
resized to at most 960 px wide and re-encoded as JPEG, so the page does not
depend on hotlinking (Wikimedia rate-limits bursts). Each opens the
full-size original at its source. Public-domain and CC0 files carry no
conditions; the CC BY and CC BY-SA copies are shown with author and license
named, and the resized copies are offered under the same license as their
   originals.
5. **Placement by subject.** An image sits in the era it depicts or documents,
which is not always the era it was made: a modern photograph of a dye
plant sits with the ancient plant it shows.

Rights concerns: open an issue on the repository and the item will be removed
or replaced with a link-out while it is reviewed.

## The site's own assets

Everything else in `assets/` is original work for this project, released
under [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) alongside the
data, with one exception noted below.

| File | What it is |
|---|---|
| `og-image.png` | The 1200×630 share card: type, rules, the dip ramp and the era palette. No photography. |
| `favicon.svg`, `favicon-32.png`, `apple-touch-icon.png` | The Open Material Archive mark — a cloth dipped five times, and the leaf. |
| `jeremy.jpg` | Author portrait, published with the subject's permission. Not CC BY; all rights reserved. |

## Basemap and libraries

- Map tiles: Esri World Dark Gray Canvas (dark theme) and World Light Gray
Canvas (light theme) — © Esri, HERE, Garmin, © OpenStreetMap contributors,
