Unfolding Elegance: European Fans from the Taft Collection

Sinton Gallery

Details

Featuring sumptuous decoration and beautifully detailed paintings, the nine 18th-century fans in Unfolding Elegance represent the pinnacle of fan-making in Europe and a level of craftsmanship that was unrivaled in later periods. The museum’s rare examples depict classical myths, pastoral scenes, and biblical stories—images only seen when a woman unfurled and delicately fluttered her fan. In preparation for the exhibition, a conservator is spending over a year stabilizing these fragile objects, making it possible to share them with the public after years of being held in storage.

Cost: Admission is free for Taft members, military (with ID), youth (17 and under), students (18 and over with ID), and teachers (with ID); $15 for adults; $12 for seniors. Sundays and Mondays are free!
