The July 2026 update
July belonged to the balloon. After a spring of antenna builds and receiver tests, the payload finally flew on 16-Jul-2026 — and the home-built ground station heard it all the way up, then spent the rest of the month teaching us what to do with a radio that suddenly listens.
Highlights
  • On 16-Jul-2026, mid-flight, the ground station decoded its first packet from the balloon payload: a 12-byte beacon sent from roughly 30 km up.
  • The workshop series ran three times and drew eleven first-time visitors across the month, the most since the series started.

Progress
Three threads moved this month: the payload team closed out the pre-flight checklist and flew, the balloon downlink held end to end for the first time, and the workshop series settled into a repeatable shape.
Ground station
Jordan Lee rebuilt the low-noise amplifier mount after the second failed receive test, which turned out to be the quietest, hardest part of the whole chain. With the mount stiffened and the connector reseated, the station held a stable signal through the full 16-Jul-2026 flight.
Workshop series
The July sessions followed one arc, from theory to hardware:
  1. Antenna basics, 01-Jul-2026 — how a length of wire becomes an ear.
  2. Receiver chains, 08-Jul-2026 — filters, amplifiers, and where noise hides.
  3. Build night, 15-Jul-2026 — every attendee left with a working whip antenna.
People and meetings
A visiting robotics group toured the lab on 15-Jul-2026 and stayed for the build night that evening; two of them have since asked about membership. The group's name is still being confirmed with their coordinator — [TBD confirm the visiting group's name before publishing].

Learned
The failure that mattered most was not in the radio-frequency chain at all. Two weeks of dropped packets traced back to one loose ground connector that every checklist had skipped because it looked too simple to fail. The pre-flight list now starts with the boring parts.
